Bunion Care

A bunion, medically known as hallux valgus, is a bony bump that forms at the joint located at the base of the big toe. This condition occurs when the big toe pushes against the adjacent toe, causing the joint to become misaligned and the prominent bump to develop. Here's an explanation of what a bunion is and its common causes:

Causes of Bunions:

  1. Genetics: One of the primary factors contributing to bunions is hereditary. If your parents or close relatives have had bunions, you may be more predisposed to developing them.

  2. Foot Structure and Mechanics: Abnormal foot mechanics, such as overpronation (rolling inward of the foot), flat feet, or low arches, can increase the risk of bunions. These conditions may lead to instability in the joint at the base of the big toe.

  3. Improper Footwear: Wearing shoes that are too tight, narrow, or have a pointed toe box can contribute to the development of bunions. High-heeled shoes, in particular, can place excessive pressure on the front of the foot and force the toes into a cramped position, promoting the formation of bunions.

  4. Arthritis: Certain types of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, can affect the joints, including those in the feet, and contribute to the development of bunions.

  5. Injuries: Trauma or injury to the foot can sometimes lead to the misalignment of the big toe joint and the formation of a bunion.

Common Symptoms of Bunions:

  • A noticeable bump at the base of the big toe.
  • Pain or soreness around the big toe joint.
  • Swelling and redness at the joint.
  • Limited movement of the big toe.
  • Corns or calluses may develop where the first and second toes overlap.
