What is the difference between a Chiropodist and a Podiatrist?
In Ontario, you can be seen by either a chiropodist or podiatrist, with both professions treating the same patients with similar conditions.
The primary difference is that a podiatrist would have a DPM, or Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, and can perform bone surgeries, where chiropodists can provide soft-tissue surgeries, but not bone-related surgeries.
Chiropodists are trained primarily in Canada and the UK. In Ontario, all foot professionals who started practicing after 1993 are classified as Chirpodists.
Both professions are regulated by the College of Chiropodists, and both provide comprehensive foot care, including custom orthotics, injection therapy and more.
